The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has officially released the notification for the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination (CGSE) 2027, opening applications for 127 tentative vacancies across the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB).

For aspirants in Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu has been officially designated as a Preliminary Examination centre. Candidates are advised to apply early via the official UPSC portal before the deadline on September 22, 2026, at 6:00 PM, as center allotments operate on a first-come, first-served capacity rule.

Discipline-Wise Vacancy Distribution

The 127 tentative vacancies are categorized under two major central government bodies:

  • Geological Survey of India (111 Posts): Includes Geologist (29), Chemist (7), Assistant Geologist (34), Assistant Geophysicist (35), and Assistant Chemist (6).
  • Central Ground Water Board (16 Posts): Includes Scientist ‘B’ Hydrogeology (5), Chemical (1), Geophysics (1), Assistant Hydrogeologist (7), Assistant Chemist (1), and Assistant Geophysicist (1).

Eligibility and Application Fee

  • Age Limit: Applicants must be between 21 and 32 years of age as of January 1, 2027 (born between Jan 2, 1995, and Jan 1, 2006). Relaxations apply for reserved categories.
  • Educational Qualification: Master’s degree in relevant disciplines including Geology, Applied Geology, Physics, Geophysics, Chemistry, or Hydrogeology depending on the opted post.
  • Fee Structure: ₹200 for General/OBC/EWS candidates. Female, SC, ST, and PwBD candidates are fully exempted from fee payments.

Exam Pattern & Selection Stages

  1. Stage-I (Prelims): Objective-type OMR exam carrying 400 marks with negative marking for incorrect answers.
  2. Stage-II (Mains): Descriptive-type technical papers carrying 600 marks scheduled for June 19–20, 2027.
  3. Stage-III (Personality Test): Final interview round carrying 200 marks.
