US Carries Out Limited Strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island Amid Diplomatic Talks

SRINAGAR: The United States has carried out limited military strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, according to US officials cited by Reuters and the Wall Street Journal, amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The reported strikes took place on Monday, November 2, even as US President Donald Trump indicated that a diplomatic agreement with Iran could still be possible.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the United States has conducted a series of limited and largely undisclosed strikes against Iranian targets in recent weeks. Some US officials reportedly described the operations as defensive measures aimed at preventing Iranian forces from threatening commercial shipping in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Explosions were reported on Qeshm Island, with Iranian state media reporting blasts in the area. However, details about the exact targets, damage and possible casualties have not been independently established.

Earlier on Monday, Trump played down the possibility of further military action against Iran.

When asked whether he was considering fresh strikes after Tuesday’s US midterm elections, Trump reportedly replied, “no”.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump also claimed that oil prices had fallen by nearly $10 per barrel, describing the decline as a record. He suggested that Iran wanted to reach an agreement with Washington soon.

“Iran wants a settlement, as soon as possible. It could happen!” Trump wrote.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy claimed to have captured a fourth US MQM-170 reconnaissance and decoy drone intact near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, the IRGC’s electronic warfare unit detected the drone and took control of its guidance and control systems before bringing it down safely.

Iranian authorities claimed that the drone had been deployed to identify the country’s air defence systems along the Persian Gulf coastline and around Qeshm Island.

The MQM-170 Outlaw, manufactured by US-based Griffon Aerospace, was originally developed to simulate aerial threats and help test air defence systems and train military personnel.

However, Iran’s claims regarding the drone interceptions have not been independently verified.

The latest developments come amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical international shipping route for global energy supplies, even as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran continue.
