No Local Youth Joined Terror Groups in Jammu Kashmir in Last 9 Months: Amit Shah

SRINAGAR, Oct 18: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that no local youth from Jammu and Kashmir has joined any terrorist outfit in the last nine months, marking a major turnaround in the region’s security situation since the abrogation of Article 370.

Speaking at a media conclave in Patna, Shah said the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir has undergone a “qualitative transformation” with terrorism witnessing a sharp decline. “After the abrogation of Article 370, terror-infested Jammu and Kashmir has taken a U-turn. No local youth has been recruited into any terror outfit in the past nine months,” he said.

The Home Minister credited the change to the growing faith of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in democracy and development. “Earlier, Pakistan didn’t have to send terrorists from across the border; they used to arm our own youth. But now, the people of Jammu and Kashmir believe they belong to India — and India belongs to them,” he added.

Highlighting the progress in democratic processes, Shah said, “Democracy has been fully restored in Jammu and Kashmir. Panchayat and municipal polls have been held, and assembly elections have also taken place. Rajya Sabha elections will be conducted soon.”

Responding to remarks by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who said that a “gulf” still remains between Jammu and Kashmir and New Delhi due to the delay in restoring statehood, Shah said, “He may be saying this due to political compulsions. But the restoration of statehood will happen at an appropriate time — after consultations with all stakeholders, including him.”

Shah reiterated that the government is committed to ensuring peace, stability, and development in Jammu and Kashmir.
