Srinagar, October 20, 2025
Parvez Rasool, the all-rounder who made history as the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to represent India, has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 36-year-old player from Bijbehara informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his decision on October 19, and made it official on Monday, October 20, 2025.
Historic Journey from Kashmir to Team India
Rasool’s cricketing journey is nothing short of inspirational. He broke barriers when he played his maiden One Day International (ODI) for India against Bangladesh on June 15, 2014, in Dhaka. Three years later, he represented India in a T20 International against England in Kanpur on January 26, 2017. Although his international career consisted of just two matches, Rasool’s rise from a conflict-affected region to the Indian national team remains a landmark moment for Jammu Kashmir cricket.Qouting by Kashmir life
“When we started playing, not many took Jammu and Kashmir cricket seriously. But we went on to beat some big teams and perform well in the Ranji Trophy. I led the team for many years, and it gives me immense satisfaction to have contributed to cricket in my state,” Rasool told Sportstar.
Domestic Career and Achievements
Born on February 13, 1989, Parvez Rasool made his first-class debut in 2008 and became a key figure for the Jammu and Kashmir Ranji Trophy team. His breakthrough came in the 2012–13 season, scoring 594 runs and taking 33 wickets in just seven matches, which earned him a call-up to the India A and later the senior national side.
He captained the J&K team across formats and led them to several historic wins, including the memorable victory over Mumbai in the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy. Rasool also played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Pune Warriors India, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Challenges and Resilience
Despite his achievements, Rasool’s career wasn’t without challenges. He often highlighted the lack of infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir’s cricket system. In 2021, he was involved in a dispute with the Jammu Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) over equipment-related allegations, which he described as “unfortunate and baseless.”
Through it all, Rasool remained a strong advocate for transparency and better facilities for young cricketers in the region. His leadership not only raised the standards of the state team but also inspired a new generation of players to dream beyond boundaries.
Legacy and Future Role
As Parvez Rasool retires from international cricket, he is expected to continue contributing to the sport through coaching, mentoring, and domestic cricket development. His story from the narrow lanes of Bijbehara to wearing the India jersey is a testament to perseverance, talent, and self-belief.
Rasool’s journey symbolizes hope for many aspiring cricketers from Jammu and Kashmir — proving that passion and dedication can overcome every obstacle. His retirement marks the end of an era, but his influence will continue to shape the region’s cricketing future for years to come.
