India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has justified skipper Rohit Sharma’s decision to return to the top of the batting order in the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Rohit’s move back to his preferred opening slot comes after a string of underwhelming performances while batting at No. 6 in Adelaide and Brisbane.
This reshuffle led to KL Rahul, who had excelled as an opener in Perth and Brisbane, moving to No. 3, while Shubman Gill was excluded from the playing XI. Despite criticism, Nayar defended the team’s choices, emphasizing that they were made with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the team’s overall strategy in mind.

Rohit’s Role at the Top
Nayar highlighted Rohit’s track record as one of India’s most dependable openers, stating, “Rohit’s strength lies in giving India strong starts. His presence at the top ensures stability against Australia’s high-quality pace attack. Moving him back to the top was a natural choice to get the best out of him.”
Gill’s Bench, Sundar’s Inclusion
Explaining the decision to bench Shubman Gill, Nayar pointed out the need for variety in the attack. Washington Sundar, a spin-bowling all-rounder, replaced Gill in the lineup to balance the team. “Sundar brings more to the table with his ability to deliver with the ball and add runs lower down the order. This strategy strengthens both our batting depth and our bowling options on a surface like the MCG,” Nayar said.
KL Rahul’s Adaptability
Rahul’s shift to No. 3 is another example of India’s dynamic approach. Nayar noted that Rahul’s versatility has been an asset. “KL has proven his adaptability across formats and positions. His move to No. 3 allows us to maintain a solid top order while experimenting with combinations that benefit the team,” he added.
Strategic Flexibility for Long-Term Success
Abhishek Nayar concluded by stressing that the changes reflect India’s commitment to fielding a balanced and competitive side. With Rohit back in his comfort zone and Sundar providing an all-round option, India aims to secure an advantage in the series.
