Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi Searches Surge Over 5,000% in India After National Conference Exit Announcement
SRINAGAR: Online searches for Srinagar Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi witnessed a massive surge of more than 5,000 per cent across India following his announcement on November 3, 2026, that he was quitting the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) and resigning from his Lok Sabha seat.

The sudden increase in online interest came amid a major political development in Jammu and Kashmir, as Ruhullah publicly announced his decision to part ways with the party after a prolonged disagreement with its leadership.
According to Google Trends data cited in a report published on November 4, Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest search interest for the politician among Indian regions. Bihar, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh followed.
The development brought renewed attention to Ruhullah’s political position, his differences with the National Conference leadership and his plans for the future of politics in Jammu and Kashmir.
Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi Google Searches Cross 5,000% Increase
Search interest for Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi increased by more than 5,000 per cent, according to the reported Google Trends figures.
The searches included several variations of his name, including:
- Aga Ruhullah
- Ruhullah Mehdi
- Aga Ruhullah Mehdi
- Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi
The sharp increase indicates that a significantly larger number of people were looking for information about the Srinagar MP following the political developments.
Jammu and Kashmir emerged as the leading region for searches related to Ruhullah, followed by Bihar, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, according to the reported regional data.
However, Google Trends measures relative search interest rather than providing the actual number of searches. A rise of more than 5,000 per cent should therefore not be interpreted as the exact number of people who searched for his name or as an indication of public support.
Why Did Searches for Aga Ruhullah Increase?
The surge in online searches followed Ruhullah’s announcement on November 3 at Behisht-e-Zehra Park in Budgam.
He addressed a public gathering organised to mark the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi, a prominent religious and political figure who was killed in 2000.
During an address lasting around 80 minutes, Ruhullah announced that he was ending his association with the National Conference and stepping down from his parliamentary position.
His announcement came after months of differences with the party leadership over several political and public issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir.
The development attracted attention beyond the region, with people searching online for details about his resignation, political background, disagreements with the National Conference and possible future plans.
Ruhullah Announces Exit From National Conference
Ruhullah’s decision marked a major political development for the National Conference, a party in which he had been an active political figure for several years.
During his address in Budgam, he criticised party president Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over what he described as the failure to honour important electoral commitments made to the people during the 2024 Assembly elections.
He particularly raised questions about the restoration of Article 370, the protection of Jammu and Kashmir’s political and constitutional rights, reservation policy and the release of prisoners.
Ruhullah maintained that his differences with the party were based on political principles and commitments rather than personal grievances.
He also questioned the party leadership’s approach towards issues that had featured prominently in its election campaign.
The National Conference has also responded to his departure, criticising his actions and questioning his record in Parliament.
What Did Ruhullah Say About His Political Future?
During his Budgam address, Ruhullah indicated that his departure from the National Conference would not necessarily mark the end of his political activities.
Instead, he spoke about the possibility of building a broader movement involving young people and individuals committed to what he described as protecting the rights, dignity and interests of Jammu and Kashmir.
He called upon young people to come forward and participate in the political process.
Although he indicated the possibility of a new political platform, his immediate emphasis was on building a movement rather than simply joining another political party.
His remarks have added another dimension to the political developments in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly regarding the future direction of his supporters and political activities.
Will Srinagar Get a New Lok Sabha MP?
Ruhullah’s announcement also raised questions about the future of the Srinagar parliamentary constituency.
Although he announced his resignation from the Lok Sabha and submitted his resignation letter to Speaker Om Birla, the parliamentary seat does not automatically become vacant merely because a member announces the decision.
The formal acceptance of the resignation by the Lok Sabha Speaker is required under the applicable parliamentary procedure.
If the resignation is accepted, the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency would become vacant, and any subsequent by-election would be conducted in accordance with the applicable election laws.
The political developments have therefore drawn attention to both the National Conference and the future representation of Srinagar in Parliament.
Google Trends Surge Does Not Represent Actual Search Numbers
While the reported increase of more than 5,000 per cent has attracted attention, it is important to understand how Google Trends presents search data.
Google Trends generally displays search interest on a relative scale rather than revealing the exact number of searches made by users.
A sharp increase means that interest in a particular search term has risen significantly compared with the selected reference period.
It does not necessarily mean that millions of people searched for the politician, nor does it establish how many people support or oppose him.
In Ruhullah’s case, the reported increase reflects the sudden rise in online attention surrounding his announcement to quit the National Conference and resign from Parliament.
The latest development has once again placed Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi among the most searched political personalities in Jammu and Kashmir during the period covered by the reported Google Trends data.
