Fuel Tanker Explosion in Western Iran Kills 11 and Injures Seven
At least 11 people lost their lives and seven others sustained injuries following a massive fuel tanker explosion in western Iran.
According to state media reports via IRNA, the vehicle collided with multiple cars before catching fire near a traffic police station close to Sanandaj—a Kurdish city located roughly 400 kilometers (248 miles) west of Tehran. Preliminary reports indicated that a faulty braking system caused the tragic accident. The injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
This incident mirrors a similar crash near Sanandaj in 2018, when a collision involving a fuel tanker and an intercity passenger bus resulted in 15 deaths and four injuries. Official figures show that road and traffic accidents claim upwards of 17,000 lives annually in Iran, with experts pointing to unsafe vehicle standards, traffic rule violations, and stretched emergency services as primary contributors to the high mortality rate.
