J&K Power Cuts: Feeders With Over 40% Losses Face 6-Hour Daily Curtailment
Srinagar, September 25: The Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Department (JKPDD) is enforcing daily power curtailment based on the Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses recorded on individual feeders, with areas having losses above 40 per cent facing up to six hours of curtailment every day.
The government provided the details in a reply to a question raised by the Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
Power curtailment linked to feeder losses
According to the government, the present Load Curtailment Programme is based on the loss level of individual feeders.
The department has adopted the following structure:
- Less than 15% AT&C losses: No curtailment
- 15% to 40% losses: 3 hours of daily curtailment
- More than 40% losses: 6 hours of daily curtailment
The government said the programme is intended to regulate power supply according to the performance and loss levels of different feeders.
Areas with supply issues being monitored
The government further informed the Assembly that feeders and areas experiencing frequent interruptions, low voltage or inadequate power supply are being identified and monitored by concerned field officers.
The monitoring is based on factors including feeder performance, loading conditions, consumer complaints and field reports.
The situation is also reviewed during periods of peak summer and winter demand, particularly in remote and hilly areas where difficult terrain and weather conditions can affect the reliability of power supply.
RDSS works underway to strengthen power network
To improve the distribution network, JKPDD is implementing works under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
According to the government, the works include replacing old and worn-out conductors with AB Cable, augmenting undersized conductors and replacing or augmenting overloaded and ageing distribution transformers.
The department said various measures are also being undertaken to strengthen and augment the electricity distribution system across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
These works are being carried out through centrally sponsored schemes, including RDSS, as well as UT Capex.
The government said the measures are aimed at improving the reliability of the distribution network and ensuring a more reliable and uninterrupted power supply across J&K.
