Wular Lake Freezes as North Kashmir Experiences Record-Low Temperatures

Parts of the iconic Wular Lake in north Kashmir have turned into an icy expanse as temperatures plummeted to seven degrees below freezing. The phenomenon, described by locals as unprecedented in over two decades, has created a striking winter scene while disrupting livelihoods in the region.

A Rare Winter Wonderland

The freezing of Wular Lake has turned the area near Saderkoot Payeen village in Bandipora district into a playground for children testing the icy surface. Geese and domestic ducks have also been seen flocking on the frozen lake, providing a picturesque yet unusual sight.

“This level of freezing hasn’t been witnessed for over 20 years,” shared locals, marveling at the rare natural spectacle that has drawn widespread attention.

Economic Challenges for Locals

The frozen lake, while mesmerizing, has disrupted the lives of those dependent on its resources. Fishermen and harvesters of water chestnuts and lotus stems are struggling to navigate the icy surface.

“The icy surface seems thicker today,” noted Showkat Maqbool from the Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA). He explained that boat movement within the lake has been severely hindered since December 21, affecting trade and transportation.

Thriving Birdlife Amid the Freeze

Amidst the challenges, Wular Lake remains a hotspot for migratory birds, drawing bird enthusiasts and nature lovers. The sight of thousands of birds against the frozen backdrop has added a unique charm to the region, reaffirming its ecological significance.

A Delicate Balance

The freezing of Wular Lake highlights the harshness of winter in north Kashmir, where natural beauty coexists with challenges for those reliant on the environment. As temperatures remain low, the frozen lake stands as a testament to the region’s resilience and natural wonder.
