MBBS, BDS Interns Protest Across J&K, Demand ₹30,000 Monthly Stipend
SRINAGAR: MBBS and BDS interns staged peaceful protests at Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) across Jammu and Kashmir and at SKIMS Bemina on Monday, demanding a revision of their long-pending internship stipend and implementation of recommendations pending with the authorities.
The protests were part of a collective campaign by medical interns seeking a monthly stipend of ₹30,000, along with action on recommendations that they said have remained pending for a considerable period.
MBBS, BDS Interns Demand Stipend Revision
Carrying banners and placards, interns raised concerns over what they described as the prolonged delay in addressing their stipend-related demands.
The protesting interns said they are performing clinical duties and contributing to patient care and healthcare delivery during their internship. They argued that the nature of their responsibilities warrants a more appropriate and dignified stipend.
The demonstrations were reported from GMCs across Jammu and Kashmir and SKIMS Bemina, highlighting that the demand extends beyond any single medical institution.
Interns Seek Implementation of Finance Committee Recommendations
Among the key demands raised during the protests was the implementation of pending Finance Committee recommendations concerning the internship stipend.
Interns also highlighted the principle of “equal work, equal pay”, maintaining that their clinical responsibilities and contribution to healthcare services should be appropriately recognised.
According to the protesting interns, the stipend issue has remained unresolved despite repeated representations to the concerned authorities.
Demand for Uniform Stipend Structure Across J&K
The interns also called for a fair and uniform stipend structure for MBBS and BDS interns across medical institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.
They said differences or inadequate remuneration create concerns among interns who are undertaking similar clinical responsibilities during their compulsory training.
The protesters urged the administration to take up the matter on priority and resolve their long-standing demands without further delay.
Peaceful Protests Held Across Medical Institutions
The demonstrations remained peaceful, with interns using banners and placards to draw attention to their demands.
The interns reiterated that their campaign is focused on securing what they consider fair compensation and dignified treatment for the services they provide during their internship.
They appealed to the authorities to consider their demands and take concrete steps towards revising the stipend and implementing the pending recommendations.
The issue is expected to remain a key concern among medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir as they await a response from the concerned authorities.
