J&K Weather Update: Widespread Rain, Thunderstorms Likely; Heavy Rain Alert for Jammu and Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir is set for an active spell of weather, with widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds expected across several parts of the Union Territory over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Meteorological Centre Srinagar.

The latest forecast indicates that both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions are likely to experience weather activity, while isolated areas of Jammu division may receive heavy rainfall. The weather system has also prompted a cautionary advisory for areas vulnerable to landslides, mudslides and flash floods.

J&K Weather Today: Rain and Thunderstorms Expected

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast light to moderate rain and thunderstorms at many places across Jammu and Kashmir, with more widespread activity expected around September 1.

In Kashmir, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are likely on August 31 and September 1.

Jammu division is expected to see more intense weather in some locations, with isolated heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds during the same period.

The forecast means weather conditions may vary significantly from one district to another, with some areas remaining relatively dry while others receive short but intense spells of rain.

Heavy Rain Alert for Jammu Division

The possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in Jammu division remains one of the key features of the latest J&K weather forecast.

Heavy rain over short periods can lead to rapid water accumulation, particularly in low-lying areas and near streams and drainage channels. People travelling through hilly and vulnerable areas are therefore advised to remain alert during intense rainfall.

The IMD’s latest sub-division warning also lists heavy rain and thunderstorm/lightning warnings for August 31 and September 1, with a heavy-rain warning extending into September 2.

Kashmir Weather Forecast for September 1

For Kashmir, widespread light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are likely on September 1.

The weather department has also warned of isolated thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching 30–40 kmph.

Residents should therefore remain cautious during thunderstorms, particularly in exposed locations and areas where lightning activity is occurring.

Jammu Weather Forecast: Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds

The Jammu division is likely to experience scattered-to-widespread weather activity, with isolated heavy rain possible.

Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of around 30–40 kmph are also expected in some areas.

The combination of heavy showers and strong winds could temporarily affect road conditions, visibility and local travel.

Weather to Improve Gradually From September 2

Weather activity is expected to gradually decrease from September 2, although rainfall will not disappear completely.

Kashmir is likely to receive fairly widespread rainfall on September 2, while Jammu division may see scattered rain.

From September 3 to September 5, rainfall activity is expected to become more limited, with isolated rain likely in Kashmir and scattered rainfall possible in Jammu division.

Isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph may also occur in Jammu division during this period.

IMD Warns of Landslides and Flash Floods

The weather department has advised people to exercise caution in areas vulnerable to landslides, mudslides and flash floods.

Intense rainfall over a short period can increase the risk of sudden water accumulation and slope instability, particularly in mountainous and already vulnerable locations.

Residents are advised to monitor official weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel through vulnerable areas during periods of intense rainfall.

J&K Weather Forecast: September 3 to September 5

According to the extended forecast:

September 1: Widespread rain and thunderstorms likely across J&K; isolated heavy rain possible, particularly in Jammu division.
September 2: Rainfall activity begins to decrease, but fairly widespread rain may continue in Kashmir and scattered rain in Jammu.
September 3–5: Mostly isolated rainfall in Kashmir and scattered rainfall in Jammu, with isolated thunderstorms and lightning possible in Jammu division.

The IMD’s official warning page currently shows no warning for September 3–5, indicating a gradual reduction in the intensity of the weather spell.

Weather Advisory for Residents

People living in landslide-, mudslide- and flash-flood-prone areas should remain particularly cautious during heavy showers.

Residents are advised to:

Exercise caution while travelling during thunderstorms.
Avoid crossing swollen streams and water channels.
