Jammu and Kashmir Power Crisis: Govt Seeks 350 MW from Delhi, Promises 200 Free Units.
J&K Government Seeks Additional Power to Address Winter Shortages: Minister Javed Ahmad Dar
Srinagar, November 23: The Jammu and Kashmir government, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, is actively working to resolve the ongoing power crisis in the Valley, particularly during the challenging winter months. Minister of Agriculture Production, Rural Development Department, and Panchayati Raj, Javed Ahmad Dar, announced that the state has sought an additional 350 MW of electricity from Delhi to address the shortages.
Speaking during a media briefing in Baramulla, as reported by Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling its electoral promises. Among these is the provision of 200 free electricity units, a key promise in the ruling party’s manifesto.
“Our manifesto is a promise to the people, and we will implement every part of it. Citizens will soon benefit from the 200 free units of electricity as committed,” said the Minister.
The severe power crisis in the Valley, a recurring issue during the winter season, has been exacerbated by increased electricity demand and lower water levels in power-generating sources. Minister Dar revealed that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already initiated discussions with Delhi to secure additional electricity.

“The government is in talks to secure 350 MW of additional electricity, which will significantly alleviate the current power supply issues,” he stated, expressing optimism that the shortages would be largely resolved once the request is approved.
In addition to addressing power supply concerns, the Minister touched upon road infrastructure in the region. Acknowledging public frustration over road conditions, he urged patience, emphasizing that major repair and development projects would commence in the summer. He assured the public that urgent issues would be tackled promptly through interim measures.
The Jammu and Kashmir government appears focused on mitigating immediate challenges while also delivering on its long-term commitments to improve infrastructure and public services.
