Srinagar: Traffic Police Seize Over 3,000 Vehicles in Nine-Day Crackdown on Underage Driving

In a decisive move to address underage driving and traffic violations, the Traffic Police Department in Srinagar has seized more than 3,000 vehicles, including both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, over the past nine days. This crackdown comes in the wake of a tragic accident at Tengpora on November 14, which claimed the lives of two young boys and left another critically injured. The incident has spurred widespread public outrage and intensified the focus on reckless and underage driving in the region.

Robust Campaign Against Traffic Violations

A senior traffic police official stated that this campaign targets the growing menace of minor drivers and other traffic violations.

“In the last nine days, we have seized over three thousand vehicles for various offenses. Our focus is to ensure the safety of all road users,” the official said, according to Kashmir News Observer (KNO). He added that the drive typically starts at 8:30 AM and continues until as late as 11:30 PM, depending on the need.

The official emphasized that the initiative is aimed at reducing accidents, particularly those involving minors. “Underage drivers often lack the maturity and experience needed for safe driving. This campaign is about making Srinagar’s roads safer for everyone,” he explained.

Public Support for the Crackdown

The crackdown has received significant support from Srinagar residents, who report noticeable improvements in road safety.

Umer, a local resident, remarked, “The crackdown was much needed. There’s a marked difference on the roads now, with much less underage driving and improved overall traffic behavior.”

Wahid, another Srinagar resident, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The streets feel safer, and it’s rare to see young kids behind the wheel anymore. The traffic police are doing a commendable job, and this effort should continue.”

High-Level Meeting on Road Safety

To strengthen traffic management and implement safety recommendations, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Traffic, Jammu and Kashmir, convened a meeting with all unit heads of the Traffic Police. The meeting addressed current challenges in traffic management and the implementation of Supreme Court recommendations on road safety.

This ongoing campaign demonstrates a firm commitment by the authorities to reduce accidents and ensure safer commuting for all.
