SRINAGAR, Oct 27 (KNT): The Jammu and Kashmir Government has imposed a ban on the sale, storage, and distribution of three ghee brands in Jammu district after they failed laboratory tests, which revealed the presence of sub-standard vegetable oil instead of pure dairy fat.
According to officials quoted by Kashmir News Trust (KNT), the banned products include Shri Godhan Desi Ghee (also spelled Shree Gordhan), Eassy Dairy Cow Ghee, and MFP 56 Bhog A2 Desi Ghee. These samples were tested at a Delhi-based laboratory, where reports confirmed that the products did not meet the prescribed quality standards and were unsafe for human consumption.

Officials said the three ghee brands, manufactured in Haryana, failed multiple purity and safety parameters. “The laboratory results confirmed the use of vegetable oil blends not suitable for consumption as pure ghee,” an official stated, adding that immediate withdrawal of these products from the market has been ordered.
The ban, issued by the designated Food Safety Authority, currently applies to Jammu district, where the sale and consumption of these products were found to be higher. In Kashmir Valley, however, officials noted minimal circulation of these brands, so no additional restrictions were deemed necessary.
Retailers and distributors in Jammu have been instructed to remove the banned products from shelves, while the Food Safety Department has launched a verification drive to ensure compliance. Legal proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 have also been initiated against the manufacturers and distributors.
Authorities have urged consumers to carefully check packaging details and avoid purchasing these particular ghee brands until further notice. “Public health is our top priority, and strict action will continue against sub-standard food products,” an official spokesperson said.
Health experts have also appealed to residents to remain cautious about unverified brands and only buy dairy products that carry proper FSSAI certification and labeling.
