JKBOSE Proposes Basic and Standard Level Mathematics for Class 10 | Major Exam Reform

JKBOSE Proposes Basic and Standard Level Mathematics for Class 10 Under NEP 2020

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has proposed a significant reform for Class 10 students by introducing a dual-level Mathematics examination, giving students the option to choose between “Basic” and “Standard” levels. The initiative aims to reduce academic stress for students who do not wish to pursue Mathematics at the senior secondary level.

According to officials quoted by Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the proposal will help categorize students based on their interest and future academic plans, ensuring that those who do not continue Mathematics after Class 10 are not compelled to take the more difficult Standard-level paper.

Director Academics JKBOSE, in its latest notification, stated that this reform aligns closely with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The Board has sought public opinion from parents, civil society members, students, teachers, and academicians to refine the proposal before implementation.

As per the proposed framework, Class 10 will feature a single Mathematics examination with two levels—Basic and Standard. Students can choose the level based on their academic preferences. Officials clarified that the Standard level will maintain the existing difficulty pattern, while the Basic level will be relatively easier.

JKBOSE has also confirmed that the syllabus, classroom teaching, and internal assessments for both levels will remain identical. This will give students enough time to explore all topics before deciding which level to opt for during the board examination.

The notification further states that students choosing Standard level but failing the exam will be eligible to appear in the Bi-Annual Examination for either Basic or Standard Mathematics. Likewise, students opting for Basic level but later wishing to pursue Mathematics at senior secondary level can take the Standard-level compartment examination.

JKBOSE has invited all stakeholders to submit their views within ten days of the notification, ensuring a well-rounded and inclusive decision-making process that prioritizes students’ academic needs and mental well-being.
