Teen Dies After Sand Extraction Mishap in Baramulla’s Pattan Area
Baramulla, Oct 22: A 17-year-old boy from Singpora area of Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district died on Wednesday morning after being seriously injured while extracting sand from a riverbed, officials said.
Police sources said the boy was injured late Tuesday night while working with others to collect sand. He suffered a serious head injury and was taken to JVC Hospital, Bemina, where doctors declared him dead early Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Amjaad Hamid, a resident of Singpora, Pattan. Locals called the incident tragic and urged the authorities to take action against unsafe and unregulated sand extraction along the riverbanks in the area.
“Many young boys do this work because of poverty and unemployment. It is risky, especially at night, and safety rules are rarely followed,” said a local resident.
