Officials said the body of Payal Devi, daughter of Krishan Lal and a resident of Korara Mohalla in Doda, was spotted near the dam site and later retrieved by teams of police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Payal allegedly jumped into the Chenab from Shiva Bridge near Prem Nagar on September 5, following which police, SDRF personnel and local volunteers launched a search operation.

A video purportedly recorded moments before the incident, showing locals trying to dissuade her, had also circulated on social media. In the video, she was heard saying “Bye-bye Papa” to her father over the phone.

According to her father, Payal had gone to a mela and later complained of feeling unwell. She was returning when she ran towards the river and jumped into it.

After completion of medico-legal formalities, the body was handed over to the family for the last rites.
