SHOPIAN, Oct 13: J&K Police Take Action Against Illegal Mining in Shopian:Jammu and Kashmir Police have intensified their crackdown on illegal mining activities in south Kashmir, booking two vehicles and challaning six others involved in unauthorized extraction and transportation of minerals from Rambiara Nallah in the Zainapora and Turkwangam areas of Shopian district.
A police official said that during routine patrolling on the Heff–Sugan axis, the SHO of Police Station Zainapora, along with the Incharge of Police Post Turkwangam, intercepted a Tipper (JK22A-8507) and a Tractor (JK22D-1146) operating without valid royalty documents. Both vehicles were identified as repeat violators, prompting the registration of FIR No. 85/2025 at Police Station Zainapora under relevant provisions of law, and investigations have been initiated.
Additionally, six other vehicles — including three JCBs, two Dumpers, and one Tipper — were challaned for first-time violations through the Geology and Mining Department under the MMRD Act. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the owners in accordance with statutory provisions.
The official emphasized that the police remain committed to protecting natural resources in the region and reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards illegal mining. Citizens have been urged to support this initiative by reporting such activities to authorities.
This latest action underscores the Jammu and Kashmir administration’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal extraction of minerals, protect the environment, and ensure compliance with mining regulations across the Union Territory.
