JKBOSE to Begin Free Textbook Distribution by November-End, 15% Syllabus Relaxation Announced

SRINAGAR, Oct 25: The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has announced that it will begin distributing free textbooks up to Class 8 by the end of November 2025, ensuring that all deserving students receive their books by the first week of December. The initiative comes as part of the Board’s commitment to streamline the academic process ahead of the new session.

Addressing a press conference at JKBOSE headquarters in Srinagar, Secretary Ghulam Hassan Sheikh said that unlike last year, when textbook distribution was delayed, the Board has taken proactive steps to ensure timely delivery this year.

“It is a fact that the free textbooks couldn’t be delivered to students on time last year due to various factors, including the shifting of the academic session and logistical challenges. However, this year, by the end of November, textbooks will reach every corner of the Kashmir Valley, and by the first week of December, all students up to Class 8 will have their books,” Sheikh assured.

Committee to Review Class 11 Board Exams

On the possibility of scrapping the Class 11 board exams, Sheikh said that JKBOSE has formed a committee to assess the pros and cons of the proposal.

“If the change benefits students academically, we will go ahead with it. However, if the committee finds that the current system serves students better, the exams will continue as usual,” he stated.

He added that the Board is also working to realign with the government’s decision to shift back the academic session to the November-December cycle, a move aimed at synchronizing the education calendar across Jammu and Kashmir.

15% Syllabus Relaxation Announced

Due to weather-related disruptions that affected the academic calendar, JKBOSE has announced a 15% syllabus relaxation for all annual regular board exams in the Kashmir Division and winter zones of the Jammu Division.

Explaining the details, Sheikh said:

  • For 100-mark papers, students will attempt only 85% of the questions.
  • For 80-mark papers, they must attempt 68%.
  • For 70-mark papers, 60%.
  • And for 50-mark papers, only 43% of the total questions.

This relaxation aims to ease pressure on students who faced academic disruptions caused by extended winter conditions and shortened teaching periods.

Exam Centers and Student Figures

Sheikh also shared the latest exam-related figures, noting that 95,000 students are enrolled for Class 10 exams across 994 centers, 82,000 students for Class 11 across 760 centers, and 70,000 students for Class 12 across 682 centers.

“We have already issued the date sheets well in advance. The Class 10 exams will begin from November 3, Class 12 from November 8, and Class 11 from November 19,” he said.

The timely preparation, he added, reflects BOSE’s renewed focus on transparency, punctuality, and student welfare.
