Baramulla Mudslide News, Oct 13: In a tragic incident, one person lost his life while another sustained serious injuries after a mudslide struck a construction site near Kanispora in Baramulla district of North Kashmir on Monday evening.
According to officials, the victims were working at the site when a sudden mudslide triggered by soil collapse buried them under debris. Rescue teams and locals immediately rushed to the spot and pulled the duo out of the mud before shifting them to Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla for treatment.
Unfortunately, one of the victims — identified as Mohammad Ashraf Malik (30), son of Abdul Ahad Malik, a resident of Sheikhpora Haril in Kupwara — was declared dead upon arrival by doctors.
The injured person, Om Raj (45), son of Omkar Singh from Ramban, is currently undergoing treatment at GMC Baramulla, where his condition is stated to be stable, officials confirmed.
Authorities said a case has been registered at the concerned police station, and an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the mudslide.
Preliminary reports suggest that the incident may have occurred due to loose soil and unplanned excavation work in the area, which has witnessed multiple small-scale landslides in recent weeks following intermittent rainfall across North Kashmir.
Local residents have urged the administration to review safety measures at construction sites in hilly terrain to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Official Statement
A senior official from the district administration said,
“We have taken note of the incident and directed concerned agencies to ensure that all ongoing construction activities near slope-prone areas follow proper safety protocols.”
The administration has also advised workers and contractors to avoid excavation during wet weather conditions and to use protective retaining structures wherever required.
Background
The region around Kanispora and Sheeri in Baramulla often experiences minor mudslides and soil erosion, particularly during autumn and early winter months when the ground becomes loose after rains. Experts warn that unregulated construction and lack of drainage systems further increase the vulnerability of such sites.
Conclusion
The tragic death of Mohammad Ashraf Malik has once again highlighted the need for stringent safety enforcement at construction zones in slope-prone areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed survey to prevent similar incidents in the coming weeks.
