Chris Gayle’s Srinagar Show Turns Bakhshi Stadium Into Dance Floor

Gates thrown open for free entry as fans erupt in cheer; Secy Sports Council says Gayle playing for Pulwama Titans “a proud moment” for J&K

Srinagar, Oct 28: The “Universe Boss” Chris Gayle lit up the Bakhshi Stadium on Monday evening, transforming it into a carnival of music, dance, and excitement as he batted for Pulwama Titans in the ongoing Indian Heaven Premier League (IHPL).

What began as a quiet afternoon soon erupted into a festival of cricket and celebration. Initially, only a few hundred spectators dotted the stands, but as Gayle stepped onto the field, the crowd surged to over 2,000–4,000 fans. Cheers, music, and chants of “Gayle! Gayle!” filled the air, with supporters waving sweaters, climbing railings, and capturing every moment on their phones.

Eyewitnesses told Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that officials decided to open the gates for free public entry to fill the stands and give the cricket legend the reception he deserved. “The moment Chris Gayle stepped on the field, the ground erupted,” said a fan from Srinagar’s old city. “Watching him live in Kashmir feels unbelievable.”

As Gayle took guard, his effortless power-hitting reminded fans why he remains one of the greatest entertainers in world cricket. Every boundary and six was met with thunderous applause, and when he raised his arms to salute the crowd, the stadium turned into a dance floor.

Speaking to KNO, Secretary J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gul called Gayle’s participation a milestone for sports in Jammu and Kashmir. “Chris Gayle playing for Pulwama Titans is a proud moment for all of us. It shows how far sports in J&K have come — from struggling for participation to attracting global icons,” she said. Gul added that leagues like IHPL are evolving into “community-driven movements” that engage youth and promote a healthy sports culture.

However, the evening wasn’t without hiccups. Journalists covering the match complained about disorganized management and lack of basic amenities. “We don’t even have power points or water. There’s no press enclosure — we’re sitting on marble floors,” one journalist said anonymously, adding that the chaos made reporting difficult.

Despite these glitches, the night belonged to Gayle. Children perched on fences, fans danced in the aisles, and the cold Srinagar breeze mixed with the warmth of cheers and celebration. “It was a moment to remember,” said a spectator. “Gayle brought life to Srinagar’s evening.”

The match, played between Pulwama Titans and Patnitop Warriors, saw the Warriors post 173 for 7 in their 20 overs. Gayle anchored the chase for the Titans, smashing seven boundaries and a six — giving fans a nostalgic reminder of his glory days in world cricket.
