SRINAGAR, Oct 17 (Times of Kashmir):Dry Spell to Hold in J&K: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast that the ongoing dry spell across Jammu and Kashmir is expected to continue for several more days, with only a slight chance of light snowfall over isolated higher reaches of North Kashmir during the third week of October.
According to the latest weather bulletin issued by the MeT Centre, the union territory will witness mainly dry and stable conditions on October 17, 19, and 20, while partly to generally cloudy skies may appear during the evenings of October 18, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26.

The department further indicated that a brief spell of very light snowfall is possible over some high-altitude areas of North Kashmir, particularly around October 21, followed by another chance of light snow on October 24. Despite these chances, the overall weather pattern is expected to remain calm, with no significant western disturbance predicted during this period.
Farmers have been advised to continue regular agricultural and horticultural activities, as the ongoing dry weather remains favorable for harvesting and post-harvest processes. The MeT officials said that the stable conditions will benefit farmers and commuters alike, ensuring smooth travel across most routes, including those connecting remote mountain areas.
A senior MeT official said, “The prevailing dry conditions are expected to persist, with only minor fluctuations in temperature. The nights may become colder, particularly in upper reaches, as the region moves closer to the winter season.”
The dry spell, which began in early October, has already led to declining water levels in several rivers and streams, while morning fog and chilly nights have started to mark the arrival of autumn’s end. Residents in Srinagar and other parts of the valley have also reported an increase in early morning frost and colder evenings.
The department’s extended outlook suggests that no major weather activity is likely until the end of the month. However, travelers to high-altitude destinations such as Gurez, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Kupwara have been urged to remain cautious, as minor snowfall or slippery conditions may occur during the predicted dates.
The MeT Centre continues to closely monitor atmospheric changes and will issue fresh advisories if any significant western disturbance approaches the region.
