IMD Warns of Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rainfall in South, Northeast India Over Next 7 Days
New Delhi, June 8: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several states in South and Northeast India over the next seven days as the southwest monsoon continues to advance across the country.
According to the latest IMD forecast, widespread rainfall activity is expected over Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. The department has cautioned that some regions may witness intense downpours, leading to waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, and disruptions to transportation services.
The IMD has predicted isolated extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Coastal Karnataka from June 8 to June 10. Similar weather conditions are likely over South Interior Karnataka on June 9 and 10, while North Interior Karnataka may receive extremely heavy rainfall on June 10.
In Northeast India, persistent rainfall is expected throughout the week, particularly over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and neighboring states. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain alert and follow local weather advisories.
The weather department has also warned fishermen against venturing into rough sea areas along parts of the western coastline during the warning period. Travelers and commuters are advised to check weather updates before planning journeys.
Experts attribute the increased rainfall activity to the strengthening southwest monsoon, which has been progressing steadily across southern and northeastern regions of the country.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, avoid flood-prone areas, and stay updated through official IMD bulletins and local administration advisories.
