SRINAGAR, Oct 12: J&K Govt Introduces Major Change in Class 8 Exams. In a move set to transform the academic evaluation system, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has announced that all Class 8 annual examinations will now be conducted in-house by schools under the supervision of Cluster or Complex Heads, beginning from the 2024–25 academic session.
The decision, formalized through Government Order No. 629-JK(Edu) of 2025 dated October 11, 2025, aims to make school assessments more competency-based, child-centered, and aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Shift from Board-Style to School-Based Evaluation
Until now, Class 8 examinations were conducted externally, often creating unnecessary pressure on students. Under the new system, schools will hold Summative or Annual Exams within their premises, focusing on real learning outcomes rather than rote memorization.
Officials said the approach emphasizes continuous assessment, with regular formative evaluations, remedial support for struggling learners, and supplementary chances to ensure that every child is academically ready to enter Class 9.
Implementation Framework
The order, issued by Ram Niwas Sharma (IAS), Secretary, School Education Department, entrusts the District Institute of Education and Training (DIETs) with maintaining student data and ensuring proper implementation through Cluster Heads.
Both SCERT and DIETs have been directed to train teachers in preparing competency-based question papers, using Holistic Progress Cards (HPCs), and adopting modern evaluation tools that reflect each student’s learning curve.
Focus on Learning Gaps
In an important reform step, schools have been asked to prepare common question papers addressing areas where students previously struggled — as identified in the PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024 performance report.
The Director of School Education will monitor exam scheduling, while Cluster Heads will ensure transparency and consistency across schools.
Academic Calendar and Results
- Results will be declared before March 20 in Summer Zone schools.
- Results will be declared before October 25 in Winter Zone schools.
- New sessions will begin from April 1 (Summer Zone) and November 1 (Winter Zone).
Strengthening School–Parent Collaboration
The order also highlights the importance of Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) to build stronger communication between schools and families. Regular PTMs will now be made mandatory for tracking student progress and discussing individualized learning plans.
A Step Toward NEP-Aligned Education
Education experts have welcomed the move, calling it a step toward reducing exam stress and promoting conceptual learning. By decentralizing exams and empowering schools, the government hopes to nurture an assessment system that values skills, understanding, and creativity over rote learning.
With this reform, J&K joins other NEP-aligned states in creating a more inclusive and growth-oriented education model.
