SRINAGAR: Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday as sub-zero conditions continued across most parts of Kashmir during Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period.

Several locations in the Valley reported temperatures below minus 6 degrees, with Sonamarg emerging as the coldest at minus 7.0 degrees Celsius, according to data compiled by Kashmir Weather.
In south Kashmir, Pulwama registered a low of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius, Shopian minus 6.3 degrees, Anantnag minus 6.1 degrees and Pahalgam minus 6.2 degrees. Qazigund settled at minus 5.0 degrees, while Awantipora and Budgam recorded minus 5.4 degrees and minus 5.3 degrees respectively. Srinagar Airport logged a minimum of minus 5.8 degrees, while Kupwara and Zethan Rafiabad recorded minus 5.8 degrees and minus 5.9 degrees. Gulmarg registered minus 3.5 degrees, while Kokernag and Baramulla were comparatively warmer at minus 1.6 degrees and minus 1.4 degrees.
In north Kashmir, Sopore recorded minus 6.5 degrees, Bandipora minus 4.3 degrees and Ganderbal minus 3.1 degrees. Beerwah in Budgam district registered a minimum of minus 5.5 degrees. Temperature data for Kulgam was not available.
The Jammu region witnessed milder winter conditions, with Jammu city recording a minimum of 3.8 degrees Celsius and Jammu Airport 5.6 degrees. Banihal was the warmest in the region at 8.9 degrees, followed by Katra at 6.2 degrees. Bhaderwah recorded a sub-zero temperature of minus 0.2 degrees, while Rajouri touched the freezing point at 0.0 degrees. Udhampur recorded 0.8 degrees, Ramban 2.6 degrees, Samba 1.2 degrees and Poonch 3.2 degrees. Temperature data for Doda was not available.
Ladakh continued to reel under severe cold conditions, with Leh recording minus 11.6 degrees Celsius. Kargil registered minus 10.2 degrees, Nubra Valley minus 10.8 degrees and Hanle minus 9.7 degrees.
Officials said the weather across Jammu and Kashmir has remained largely dry during the ongoing Chillai Kalan, which began on December 21. A weak Western Disturbance affected the Union Territory last month, bringing light rain and snowfall to a few isolated areas of Kashmir, but no major precipitation has been recorded since.
