India’s opener Pratika Rawal showcased her class and composure during a successful chase of 239 against Ireland at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, Rajkot. With two ODIs left in the series, Rawal is making a strong case for her inclusion in the World Cup squad.
At the start of India’s innings, captain Smriti Mandhana stole the show with her aggressive stroke play, continuing her stellar 2024 form. A backfoot pull to the boundary off Orla Prendergast set the tone early, while a similar treatment was meted out to young Georgina Dempsey. Rawal, opening alongside Mandhana, initially played second fiddle, witnessing Mandhana’s fireworks from the non-striker’s end.
When it was Rawal’s turn, she did not disappoint. A crisp cover drive and a pull shot in front of square highlighted her technical brilliance and timing. Together, the Indian openers capitalized on the Powerplay, building a solid foundation. Mandhana’s aggressive 41 came to an end, but India remained in a dominant position.
As wickets began to fall at regular intervals, Rawal anchored the innings. Despite losing Harleen Deol and Jemimah Rodrigues, Rawal’s steady approach ensured India stayed on track. Speaking after the game, Rawal reflected on her innings, stating, “When the wickets were falling, I kept it simple and focused on playing my shots. It was my responsibility to see the game through.”
Rawal found a reliable partner in Tejal Hasabnis, who grabbed her opportunity with a composed 53 not out. Together, they stitched an unbeaten 116-run stand off just 84 balls, securing India’s victory with ease. Rawal finished with a well-crafted 89, showcasing maturity beyond her years.
For Rawal, this series is an opportunity to solidify her place in the team ahead of the World Cup. While her performances so far have been against relatively less challenging bowling attacks, she will look to maintain consistency in the remaining two ODIs.
India’s next series is not until July 2025, making these matches crucial for selectors to finalize their World Cup squad. With Rawal displaying exceptional temperament and skill, her inclusion might be a decision the team management cannot ignore.
