Boost to Apple Trade Through Rail Connectivity
The minister highlighted that this initiative has connected key fruit and vegetable mandis in Kashmir to terminal markets across the country — including Delhi, Jammu, and Adarsh Nagar — ensuring steady supply despite road disruptions on the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway.
During the recent road block period, 1,25,376 apple boxes valued at ₹10.03 crore were dispatched by train from Budgam and Anantnag railway stations to Jammu and Delhi, marking a major milestone in streamlining the region’s horticulture logistics.
Government Steps to Support Horticulture Transport
The government has also strengthened coordination with the Traffic Police, Transport Department, and district administrations to guarantee smooth passage for fruit-laden vehicles. In response to truck shortages during peak harvest, JKSRTC has deployed additional vehicles to ensure uninterrupted movement.

Mughal Road Opens as Alternate Route
To address frequent traffic disruptions along the Srinagar–Jammu highway, the Mughal Road has been reopened as an alternative corridor for fruit transportation. The move is expected to further reduce transit delays and prevent economic losses for farmers during critical export periods.
Officials added that constant monitoring and coordination with weather and highway authorities have ensured that the apple transport season remains smooth despite adverse conditions.

Horticulture: Backbone of Kashmir’s Economy
Apple production remains a vital pillar of Kashmir’s economy, contributing nearly 8% to the UT’s GDP and employing over 3.5 lakh families. Government data shows that the Valley produces more than 20 lakh metric tonnes of apples annually, making it the largest apple-producing region in India.
Experts believe the rail-based apple transport system will not only cut freight costs but also help reduce post-harvest losses, enhance cold-chain management, and expand the market reach of Kashmiri produce.
Conclusion
The successful transport of 14,000 MT of apples marks a significant policy success for the J&K administration’s efforts to modernize the horticulture supply chain. With continued focus on infrastructure and logistics, Kashmir’s apple industry is poised for stronger growth in the coming years.
