AAY Beneficiaries in J&K Getting 10 Kg Extra Free Ration Since April 2025, Says Govt

SRINAGAR, OCT 29 (Times of Kashmir): The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced that all Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) beneficiaries across the Union Territory are receiving an additional 10 kilograms of free ration per person every month from April 2025 onwards. The move aims to strengthen food security among the most economically vulnerable households.

According to the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA), the extra ration is being distributed under Government Order No. 25-JK(FCS&CA) of 2025, issued on April 2, 2025. The department said the decision was taken to augment the monthly food quota of AAY households, particularly those with a family size of four or more members.

Officials confirmed that the distribution strictly adheres to the guidelines ensuring that the quantity does not exceed 10 kilograms per beneficiary under the Public Distribution System (PDS). This means that if a family has four registered AAY members, they receive an additional 40 kg of free ration each month.

A senior FCS&CA official told Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that this step was part of the government’s continued efforts to support low-income households amid inflationary pressure and rising essential commodity prices.

“The additional ration ensures that families under the AAY category do not face food shortages. It’s a welfare-driven decision in line with the government’s goal of ensuring no household goes hungry,” an official said.

Proposal for 12 LPG Cylinders Still Under Review

While the ration benefit has already been implemented, the proposal to provide 12 LPG cylinders annually to AAY families is still under government consideration. The FCS&CA department described it as a “policy matter”, stating that a final decision will be taken after evaluating the financial implications and beneficiary reach.

Officials clarified that, as of now, no separate funds have been earmarked for this initiative. The cost of additional food grains, transportation, and logistics is being met through the department’s revolving fund.

Distribution and Implementation

The free ration is being distributed through the existing Public Distribution System (PDS) network, which includes more than 6,000 Fair Price Shops across Jammu and Kashmir. The government emphasized that all eligible AAY households are covered automatically, and beneficiaries do not need to reapply to avail the benefit.

District-level monitoring teams have been directed to ensure that ration cards are updated, and distribution lists are displayed publicly at every depot for transparency.

Background: What is the AAY Scheme?

The Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) is a flagship food security initiative launched by the Government of India to provide highly subsidized food grains to the poorest sections of society. Each AAY household is entitled to 35 kg of rice or wheat per month, and with the latest J&K government order, they now receive an additional 10 kg per person free of cost.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to reduce hunger and malnutrition, especially in rural and economically backward areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

Government’s Welfare Commitment

The move aligns with the J&K administration’s broader welfare vision of ensuring food security, social justice, and economic support for all vulnerable groups. The government has also rolled out several other benefit schemes, including the Marriage Assistance Scheme and PMAY housing support, aimed at empowering low-income families.
