Government Enhances Power Supply in Kashmir by 150 MW to Mitigate Power Cuts

The Power Development Department (PDD) has increased electricity supply by nearly 150 Megawatts (MW) in the Kashmir Valley to tackle unscheduled and distress power cuts. This move comes after a recent review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, where key decisions were made to address the region’s power crisis.

Boost in Power Supply

A senior PDD official stated that the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has raised its power supply capacity from 1500 MW to 1600-1650 MW. This increase aims to alleviate the persistent issues of unplanned outages and ensure more stable electricity distribution across the valley.

Progress in Smart Meter Installation

The official also highlighted significant progress in the installation of smart meters, reporting that over 6.5 lakh smart meters have already been deployed across Jammu and Kashmir. Plans are underway to expand smart metering to the remaining areas, with tenders already issued to expedite the process.

“Both Jammu and Kashmir regions are seeing equal progress in the implementation of smart meters,” the official added, signaling the government’s commitment to modernizing the energy distribution system.

Rising Demand for Power

The demand for electricity in the Kashmir Valley has surged in recent weeks, reaching an unrestricted requirement of 2600-2700 MW, significantly higher than the supply of 1450 MW currently available. In light of this, KPDCL had requested additional power supply to minimize the impact of power shortages on residents.

This increase in supply reflects the government’s effort to reduce the burden of power cuts, particularly as the region faces heightened electricity needs during the winter months. The enhanced supply and smart metering initiatives are expected to provide a more reliable power supply and streamline energy usage in Jammu and Kashmir.
