Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link: A Historic Milestone Achieved

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project (USBRL) has reached a significant milestone with the completion of track work, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday. This project is a crucial step toward enhancing connectivity in the northern region, particularly Jammu and Kashmir.

In a post on the social media platform X, Vaishnaw described the achievement as a “historic milestone.” He stated, “Final track work on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link is complete. The ballastless track work for the 3.2 km-long Tunnel T-33, situated near the foothills of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine and connecting Katra to Reasi, was successfully completed today at 02:00 hrs.”

Key Highlights of the USBRL Project

The USBRL project is one of India’s most ambitious railway initiatives, aiming to bring seamless rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. This project has been constructed amidst challenging terrains, including tunnels, bridges, and rugged mountains. The completion of the track work signifies the nearing of operational readiness for the full stretch.

Direct Train from Delhi to Srinagar

A landmark moment is anticipated in January 2025, with the inauguration of the first direct train between New Delhi and Srinagar. This train, a third-generation Vande Bharat sleeper version, is expected to reduce the travel time for the 800-kilometre journey to under 13 hours.
