According to a report by Kashmir Life, the resolution was moved by MLA Mir Mohammad Fayaz and has been admitted under Rule 179 read with Rule 28 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business. The proposal, titled “One-Time Exemption of All Outstanding Dues on Account of Electric Tariff to Domestic Consumers”, aims to provide much-needed relief to thousands of households burdened by unpaid electricity bills.

If approved, the resolution could offer significant financial respite to low-income families struggling amid rising living costs and inconsistent power supply across various regions.

The issue of pending electricity dues has long been a matter of public concern in Jammu and Kashmir, with consumers often expressing frustration over frequent outages and increased tariffs. The proposed waiver is seen as a step toward addressing both financial hardship and long-standing grievances related to power distribution and billing.

The Assembly Secretariat confirmed that the Speaker has officially admitted the resolution, and its fate will be decided in the upcoming session. A ballot scheduled for October 22 will determine whether the proposal will be taken up for detailed discussion in the next sitting of the House.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, which currently comprises 90 elected members, includes 51 first-time legislators following the 2024 elections, marking a significant generational shift in the region’s political landscape.
